Learn more about Richard below:
“I moved to North Devon 38 years ago to take up a primary headship and by lucky chance ended up at Heasley Mill, with Exmoor National Park boundary running over the doorstep. At the time, I knew Exmoor superficially, not as well as Dartmoor, but over the years, this balance has been redressed.
I’ve always loved maps and exploring places, so with an OS map on the study wall, I’ve set about trying to walk all the big open spaces, penetrate the deep combes and find the secret corners of Exmoor. After producing a book of pen and ink sketches along the River Barle and Exe, I concentrated on trying to capture the essence of Exmoor in paint, using all the different mediums, as deemed appropriate. The colour of the hills varies so much with the seasons, and the sky and weather make a huge impact. A flat scene on one day can be transformed by another. I mainly work at home from the thousands of photos I take, usually these days from dog walks. Exmoor is a jewelled landscape: I love the contrast between the wild top of Five Barrows, the lushness of Woody Bay and the sequestered snugness of Porlock Vale.”
