Big Nature Day Talk with Jack Siviter: Beavers on Exmoor

We are delighted to welcome Jack Siviter to the Big Nature Day, who will be giving a talk on Exmoor’s Beavers.

Beavers were once a natural part of Britain’s river systems before being hunted to extinction centuries ago. Today, they are returning to parts of the landscape — including the rivers and streams of Exmoor.

This talk explores the story behind their return to Exmoor, introducing the ecology and behaviour of beavers and the remarkable ways they transform river habitats. We will look at how beaver activity can benefit wildlife, improve water systems, and reshape landscapes, while also examining the practical challenges of managing a species that so actively modifies its environment.

Meet Jack

Jack Siviter – Beavers and Wetlands Project Officer – National Trust

I have worked on Exmoor for over 10 years with the National Trust as a Ranger and have been managing beavers on the Holnicote Estate for 5 years. I am a Class 50 license holder allowing me to manage this protected species out in the landscape and have worked with beavers in other river catchments including the Tay in Scotland and the Tamar and Exe in Devon. I have worked closely and learnt from leading experts In this field such as Dr Roisin Campbell-Palmer and the Beaver Trust. I helped write the application for a wild population of beavers on Exmoor and am now managing the impacts of this work in my current role from a practical point of view.
