The Exmoor Society Archive
Our aim is to collect and protect a comprehensive archive related to Exmoor’s natural and cultural history, and to ensure that this is accessible to the public, both locally and across the world.
The archive holds an extensive collection of material about Exmoor in general, specialising in the landscape character of Exmoor, the formation of the National Park, and the history of The Exmoor Society.
In total, we look after over 1000 books, 900 pamphlets, 700 reports, 30 microstudies, along with other treasured collections of manuscripts, letters, maps, and copies of all The Exmoor Reviews and The Exmoor Society Spring Newsletters. We also hold the archive of Hope Bourne’s artwork, and the photographic collections of Malcolm MacEwan, Tom Troake, SH Burton, Brian Pearce, amongst others.
Our library contains almost every book published about Exmoor, and also includes around 500 books from the personal collections of authors Hope Bourne and Victor Bonham-Carter, both of whom played significant roles within the Society.
