Bibliography of the best Exmoor books

When formed in 1958, one of The Exmoor Society's first tasks was to draw up a list of the most important published writing on Exmoor.

Compiled by our first Chairman, John Coleman Cooke, and announced in the first edition of the Exmoor Review, The Exmoor Bibliography consisted of a list of around 200 publications. Developed and extended over the years, the 1996 revised edition features over 1,300 books, articles, and pamphlets, which fit into 20 categories as listed below. The Bibliography was then last updated in 2000.

The Exmoor Bibliography was created using recommendations from writers, historians, naturalists, local societies, the Devon and Somerset Archives, the Library Service, and many local collections, such as the North Devon Athenaeum.

Roger Miles, author of Forestry in the English Landscape (1967), compiled the third revision of the Exmoor Bibliography in collaboration with Victor Bonham-Carter, and wrote a guide to setting up an Exmoor Library in the 1991 Exmoor Review. Read his article via the link below.
