Tales from the Archive: New Donation

We have recently received a unique item for the archive. This hand-drawn, pen-and-ink, “Guide to the location of the ancient monuments found in the Lyn District of Exmoor” includes a helpful glossary of terms as well as a beautiful map showing ancient landscape features including barrows, hut circles, standing stones and beacons. In all, 67 features are named and mapped using precise grid references and descriptions.

The guide was drawn in 1961 by Frederick Juniper, an early member of the Exmoor Society, and seems to have been commissioned by the society. Frederick was an architect who retired to Lynmouth, and it was his family who kindly donated this guide.

We will be working on the guide to see how it links to other publications and guides, including the Society microstudies on antiquities written by Charles Whybrow and Hazel Eardley-Wilmot.
